In our culture, there are two main models influencing healthcare.
The biomedical model is based on the linear causality between disease and its cause. This model considers the ill body as if it was an unanimated atom, focusing only on what can be objectively measured. This approach to health has led to many useful discoveries. However, it has also separated body and soul and restricted medical practice to the sole cure of the body. In practice, this means that a symptom will always be the result of an injury to the physical body and that similar injuries will result in similar symptoms in different people.
Even without entering a consultation room, we know that this is not the case. Experience shows us that how we feel does influence our symptoms. Just think of a headache that becomes worse when you step into your busy office but gets better if you listen to some relaxing music. The way you feel does influence your headache. Moreover, symptoms do not always have a cause that can be explained in medical terms.
The bio-psychosocial model throws light on those health issues that the biomedical model seems unable to address. This model retains the idea that is central in the biomedical model that some illnesses have an external cause, such as an injury or a virus. However, it integrates it with a wider vision of the human being and considers the interaction between biological factors, such as tissue injury, and social and psychological responses.
Symptoms become individual, multi-layered experiences that express the intelligent reaction of the body-mind complex to a difficult situation. You might have forgotten what the triggering event was but the unprocessed trauma is stored in your unconscious mind and is still repeating the same response again and again, thus leading to dis-ease and, eventually, to manifested symptoms.
Hypno-psychotherapy will help you listen to the story behind your symptoms and find a healthier way to satisfy the need it highlights. This will give you the possibility to restore your innate ability to care for yourself and shape your own destiny.
